Cenveo Inc. Captures More Business Opportunities with Océ Technology

Document development time cut by two thirds; proofing saves thousands of dollars

July 31, 2007 -- Océ, a global leader in digital document management and delivery solutions, announces that Cenveo, Inc. is capturing new opportunities, achieving greater productivity and cutting costs with a complete digital document solution of Océ hardware and software. Cenveo, Inc. is the third largest graphics communication company in North America, serving primarily the markets of direct mail advertising and customer communications. Cenveo has implemented the powerful combination of Océ Document Designer Advanced (DDA) software, an Océ VarioStream® 7450 Twin continuous form printer, and Océ PRISMAproduction+™ POD software.

“The Océ solution fills a critical gap between color digital and offset in handling the quantities that customer applications require. It’s opened up new opportunities for us,” said Steve Kouroupas, Cenveo Vice President and General Manager, Direct. “This technology has allowed us to offer high volume, personalized letters and forms to our client base. The variable length of the form and the versatility in personalization lets us meet the creative needs of our customers.”

The ease of use of DDA software has been a significant advantage. “With DDA’s sophisticated features, we can do digital print composition at a very high level,” Kouroupas said. Their previous solution was overly complicated and not user friendly. Now almost all of the hundreds of thousands of documents Cenveo prints each week are developed with DDA software. Typical document development time has been reduced by two thirds, while PDF proofing using DDA is saving Cenveo thousands of dollars in production printing time, labor and consumables. The laser operators spend far less time on proofing, freeing them for other assignments.

One of the most important benefits of the hardware is the robust daily throughput. “We can easily output two million mail pieces or more a month,” said Kouroupas. “The more we can get out in a day, the better for our customers. We can achieve shorter turnaround and higher volumes, and this has become a competitive advantage over sheet-fed competitors.”

The versatility of the Océ VarioStream 7450 Twin engine gives Cenveo maximum flexibility in how and when to run high volume jobs. They can run two jobs simultaneously, choose duplexing or have two types of finishing ready to go in an instant. For example, one engine’s workflow can be configured for hole punching and collating, while another can be set up for saddle stitching. “We can keep the equipment ready so we don’t have to do a new set up for every job. This saves several hours of changeover time, which can be used for another job. Or we can hang a roll of preprinted paper on the printer and have the system ready for jobs we do on periodic basis, and still do other jobs as needed,” he added.
