Lightning Source Inc. Orders 15 Océ VarioStream 9210 Systems for State-of-the-Art Digital Book Manufacturing

Boca Raton, FL—October 15, 2006—Océ (NASDAQ: OCENY), a global leader in digital document management and delivery solutions, announces that Lightning Source Inc. has ordered 15 Océ VarioStream® 9210 black and color-capable digital printers, along with Océ PRISMAproductionTM software, to generate books on demand for some of the world's most prominent book publishers.

Lightning Source maintains one of the largest digital libraries, with more than 400,000 orderable titles from over 4,300 publishing partners around the world. The company has printed more than 33 million on-demand books to date. Every day, thousands of people order books from leading book retailers, from popular online sites and from independent publishers for two-day or next-day delivery. Instead of shipping these books from a traditional warehoused inventory, Lightning Source prints orders on demand, often in run lengths of just one for shipment directly to the end user, allowing publishers and book printers to profitably print a wider range of titles and extend their life cycles. Now more authors can economically publish their content, and publishers can respond to the short order-to-delivery timeframes of an "audience of one" publishing environment.

The Océ VarioStream 9210 printers will help Lightning Source meet its goal of responding to customer needs, while leveraging outstanding print quality to drive repeat business. The printers will also support Lightning Source's continued leadership position in the expanding digital book publishing market.

"The Océ VarioStream 9210, paired with Lightning Source's proprietary manufacturing systems, will deliver the high-quality books our customers demand, quickly and in high daily volume, while maintaining productivity and reliability with cost-effective delivery, down to runs of one unit," said J. Kirby Best, President and CEO of Lightning Source, Inc.

Lightning Source signed the contract in August 2006 and recently began installing the Océ VarioStream 9210 digital book printing solution at its Nashville headquarters. This exclusive configuration includes Océ VarioStream 9210 systems with Graphic Arts Controllers, Océ PRISMAproduction POD software, Unity Rips, and servers. Over the coming months, Lightning Source will continue installing the Océ solution in its US and UK facilities. The new technology integrates seamlessly with the existing Lightning Source front end.

"Lightning Source has built one of the most advanced and productive production workflows in the digital book publishing industry," said Joyce Virnich, Vice President of Marketing, Océ Digital Document Systems. "We are proud to partner with Lightning Source to help meet its customers' needs and capitalize on its market leadership. The Océ printers, along with Lightning Source's proprietary systems, will position Lightning Source to achieve projected growth plans that will require reliable, on-demand publishing."

Today, Lightning Source's demand-driven operation runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with an average run length of 1.8 books. A typical batch of titles will run different books side by side, in either a two-up or three-up mode. The operation uses IPDS, PDF and TIFF data streams as standard output, so Lightning Source is not only running different books side by side on the Océ VarioStream 9210, but also different PDLs. New process efficiencies enabled by Océ PRISMATM software and Lightning Source's proprietary systems allow content to be mixed at any time, so there's no need to segregate workflow for text-intensive and graphics-intensive books. The Océ printers can run any mix of books at any time. As a result, Lightning Source can maintain maximum uptime and ensure customers will receive their orders within their specified timeframe.
